We also lucked out by being there the weekend the Cochrane Rodeo was on. We missed the Calgary Stampede which Dave had wanted to see so this was a good consolation prize! It was fun to watch all the kids and their horses and then of course these crazy people who try to stay on bucking animals!
The stunt riders were fearless too. This gal was up and down and on the side of her horse so many times I got dizzy watching her. They had the shooting riders too and I'm pleased to say that this lady rider below was the only one that hit all the balloons!
Next on to another suggestion from Wendy to go to Drumheller and Royal Tyrrell Museum. Man, if you or your kids like dinosaurs, this is the place to be!! It was beyond impressive the exhibits and educational information the museum had. From the huge Torontosaurus Rex to skeletons of baby dinosaurs, this place had it all.
We had a fun day going through the museum. So many rooms and dinosaurs to see but one of my favorite displays was this blown glass art below that was on the ceiling as you entered the aquatic section (ok, maybe art is more my thing than dinosaurs!😉).
The place was huge! More dinosaur bones than I've ever seen. They even had a botanical garden. The area around Drumheller felt like a place you would find dinosaur bones. It's the oddest thing to leave the Canadian Rockies with mountains on all sides, drive through the plains with nothing but farmland and then come into this "badlands". Then in the middle of that there is this tiny little church.
We have enjoyed our time in Canada immensely. Thanks to Ron & Wendy for all the helpful tips and suggestions!
Our border crossing back into America was pretty smoky but painless. The border agent did come in and went through the refrigerator but we had planned well and had nothing for her to confiscate. She did yell at me about my plants (like all the others) but also didn't take them. Apparently there is paperwork they have to fill out and she said she didn't want to do it! Lucky for us we got to keep our plants! 😃
We were able to secure a site at St. Mary's Campground at Glacier National Park and Dave got an amazing shot of the moon that night, especially considering how smoky it was during the day. The temperature went from 86 degrees the day we arrived to a high of 58 the next day! Weather whiplash! We were thankful that we had been to Glacier before because visibility was so limited. We only had one day so we decided to make the best of it and drive on the Going to the Sun road. It had been magnificent the last time we were here. This time it was still beautiful but in an eerie way.We made it as far as Logan's pass but it was now 46 degrees and you could barely see in front of you. A bit of a contrast from our last visit, which was on September 1st, 2022 (this picture on the right was taken on September 4th).
We decided it was best to turn around and head back to the campground. Just a little scary when you know the side of the road drops off and you can't even see it! Noodle was so happy to see us back safely.😏Once again we modified our stops a bit so we could stay for 2 days in Helena, Montana. One, because there was a Costco there and we needed to stock back up for our next several weeks but second, because there is a lovely Hot Springs there and it was a perfect 75 degree day. So relaxing! One thing I sure miss about being on the road is a hot tub, so I have to get my "fix" when I can!
Next we are on to Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks. We are thankful to be back in the USA but so enjoyed our time in our neighbor to the north, we'll leave you with this video from the Rodeo and a snippet of the Canadian National Anthem.
